Along with Biloxi, Gulfport is the other county seat of Harrison County. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, in August 2005, Biloxi was the third-largest city in Mississippi, behind Jackson and Gulfport. Due to the widespread destruction and flooding, many people left the city.
